SLAVEPALLET
Face Crushing

Face Crushing is a phenomenon occurring when excessive weight is applied to the face veneer of a slave pallet, resulting in a crushing action of the wood fibers. Softwood plywood veneer is susceptible to face crushing. After a period of time, debris from the face of the pallet will dislodge and contaminate the warehouse surroundings. Studies have shown that roller casing, weight, and time cause this to happen. Face crushing will result in premature wear and decreased life expectancy of softwood slave pallets. This is a significant problem, which merits your close attention and consideration.

U.S. Product Standard PS 1-83 lists softwood species in groups one through five. Softwood slave pallets are manufactured from these groups, and more often with Douglas Fir and Southern Yellow Pine. Other wood species can be used as shown in PS 1-83 for face and core construction. Level Load testing is usually the only criteria with no concerns for wear and life expectancy or face crushing possibilities.
