Slave-Pallet Replacement

Ask a warehouse manager, "How are your slave pallets performing?" and he will say "Fine, no problem". Ask him where he stores his worn-out slave pallets, and he will say, "Out back, do you want to see them?".

In our travels we see and hear this all the time. We have become so accustomed to accepting the fact that slave pallets will deteriorate and wear out that we no longer question their performance. Each year we plug in an amount in the budget for slave pallet replacement, and each year we go right back to the same product and supplier and buy more. Yet we are convinced that our pallet inventory is performing fine, with no problems.

Close examination of used slave pallets, stored out back, you know...the worn out ones--- show the following characteristics:

  1. Face deterioration and worn down to the glue line.
  2. Chain transfer gouging with train tracks down into the faces
  3. Edge and corner damage from fork lift handling.
  4. Delamination and separation from fork lift penetration at pallet edges.

Train tracks from chain transfer movement and debris is shown clearly in the pictures taken of slave pallets from this A.S.R.S. customer pallet inventory. One pallet is manufactured with softwood veneer and the other manufactured with Western White Oak veneer.

In the following sections you will learn why face crushing occurs and why it is no longer necessary to live with this yearly expense. Also, full bull nose edges decrease chain transfer marks and fork lift damage.
